EGOD - new layout?

14 Mar 2017 16:13 #33062 by Neilson
You vid shows the latest one I have made, looks like that all ok :)

Using the launcher to call the custom scenery makes sense having the files arranged as they are in 1.4

To hard install the pack in FG my one now has the files where they should be.
I use a Mac launcher witch dose not work using command lines.

Windows FG is something i do not know.

Looks like two way to do this pack maybe?

1. One for FG add-on (by launcher)
Dose this need to be set every time or dose the launcher remember it?

2. One for install, always there every time anyone goes to EGOD or loads in there.

If the 1.4 pack was installed as it is, no launcher.
EGOD scenery would be there, from doing it that way.

Would be nice to solve this one.

It has always be a "thorn in the side" getting this to work for everyone.
I think many hard-install it to there FG thats why there never see it.
The Objects and Terrain files never get read by FG in EGOD unless the launcher Add-on is used.

Yes, the launcher keeps the setting forever after it's been added once.

Also the Mac version of FlightGear 2017.1.2 uses the same launcher by default as the Windows version...

Uh - quick question - has someone been putting the FGUK buildings into EGOD on terrasync? because all of a sudden I'm seeing it on terrasync scenery (disabled local scenery addon) & I'm sure it wasn't there before:

I can't remember who done it but I think that it might be someone at FGMEMBERS (I heard that some time ago, I don't know anything else).
And as I can tell they included also some of my additions (because I've got a fork of the EGOD scenery on my Git and placed them there as backup for myself) but no one asked before doing so.

Ah ok - I was just under the impression that Terrasync was supposed to represent current reality whereas the EGOD scenery is separate because its the FGUK fantasy base?

It is true, FG Scenery through Terrasync and web download is ONLY meant to be as in Real life and currant.

Who every did that must have got away with it sadly.

EGMH Manston scenery I made some time ago had to be updated twice with real life building being knocked down (cooling towers by Ramsgate).

Any scenery from private hangers can then be what it wants.
EGOD is a mix of both from FGUK.

Helping Robert on face book to install the pack.

I still think it needs updated to a new file layout, as the existing one gets very confusing to install.

I've just tried the download link on the website and it gives me a 403 error. Am I the only one?

Small change to make to allow you to see from the Tower View when Rembrandt is enabled:

to EGOD-Tower.xml
<effect>
        <inherits-from>Effects/model-transparent</inherits-from>
        <condition>
                <property>sim/rendering/rembrandt/enabled</property>
        </condition>
        <object-name>window</object-name>
</effect>

The main hangar takes you to www.fguk.eu/index.php/hangar/summary/3-s...-fguk-custom-scenery which is for EGOD FGUK custom Scenery 1.5 and then to drive.google.com/file/d/0BwipCEeezJP1c1dVQ2YyVVhkb00/view

This version has dependencies to OBJECT_SHARED Scenery/EGOD/Models/
which requires a tricky installation procedure. Best avoided, I rekon, because its not "portable".

If you go to the public FGUK scenery folder at drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwipCEeezJP1cElibzY1Q0J4eWc there is an EGOD.zip (May 21, 2017). Presumably this is the same thing via another route. It certainly looks and behaves the same.

But even this might cause you problems. I've spent hours trying to figure out why it won't work for me.
The issue is that the file:
>>>>>/EGOD/Objects/w010n50/w005n52/2876339.stg
is saved in "Legacy Mac OS (CR)" format. It looks fine in BBEdit, which can read it, but the lines are not separated out by FGFS on my machine! Saving it as a text file with Windows (CRLF) line ending sorted it for me.

Maybe what we could really do with is an easier-to-install version. Here is my 2 penneth/2.2 cents (and falling) on this:

All the files in:…EGOD/Objects/w010n50/w005n52/2876339.stg start with
OBJECT_SHARED Scenery/EGOD/Models/

By defining them as being "SHARED" it means that they have to to live in the root Scenery folder, ie: they must exist in
$FGROOT/data/Scenery/EGOD/Models/

This makes the Models folder of the distribution "non-portable" - so it cannot live anywhere other than in a folder called EGOD in the root Scenery folder.

I think this explains why the workaround was needed here:
www.fguk.eu/index.php/forum/scenery/3617...yout?start=440#32301

and Timi's problems here
www.fguk.eu/index.php/forum/scenery/3617...yout?start=460#33056

However if you were to rename the Scenery/EGOD/Models/ folder to say "models-w005n52", for example then you could
Move this "models-w005n52" folder into w005n52/ along with 2876339.stg
and use OBJECT_STATIC definitions, which allow for relative paths.

So then doing search and replace in 2876339.stg of
OBJECT_SHARED Scenery/EGOD/Models/
to
OBJECT_STATIC models-w005n52/

139 occurences?

would make the whole thing portable. It could go anywhere (even Google Drive/Dropbox for example) and all that would be required is to put a reference to it via the launcher. Works for me, anyway :)

The structure would then look like this . . .

The "EGOD" folder is wherever you personally decided to place the "EGOD" folder and then referenced via the FGFS launcher:

Just a thought but won't this allow for relative paths?
OBJECT_SHARED Models/

That's the way the project3000 is setup anyway.

I don't think so, see:
wiki.flightgear.org/File_Formats#OBJECT_SHARED_lines

OBJECT_SHARED lines
<object-path> is relative to the data directory (FG_ROOT)
.
.
.
OBJECT_STATIC lines
Adds static objects to the tile, just like OBJECT_SHARED. There are three differences to OBJECT_SHARED (apart from the name):

the path is relative to the tile directory where the *.stg file with this entry is located. For example, relative to 130n30/w123n37/. This usually means that all 3D object files, textures, and XML animation files are in this tile directory, too.
